RESEARCHERS at the University of Toronto have created a device no bigger than a Blackberry which is able to analyse and detect cancer biomarkers using only minute quantities of biological samples.
The researchers believe the microchip technology they're working with has the potential to not only speed far more accurate cancer diagnoses, but make it possible to detect some elusive cancers at a much earlier stage than is currently possible.
The research team says it hopes to start commercialising the technology in about five years and plans to use it first for prostate cancer, which is often left undetected by currently available screening diagnostics.
