LIFE Technologies and Nanosys have announced a cross-licensing agreement to share the intellectual property rights to fluorescent nanocrystals (Quantum Dots).
The companies believe new products developed as a result of this agreement will help prevent counterfeiting worldwide.
The quantum dots will allow manufacturers to trace the source of their materials and manage and track product shipments, helping stop counterfeit material use.
The companies believe the anti-counterfeiting materials will have application in pharmaceutical and diagnostic products, food and beverages, agricultural and environmental sources and electronic goods as well as in reducing counterfeiting of currency, documents, fine art, and luxury goods.
The Quantum dots are flurescent particles invisible to the eyes. When exposed to UV light sources, the particles emit an intensely bright light.
The dots can be easily be blended with polymers, gels, or inks and printed onto most surfaces.
