Just six years ago, human DNA sequencing would have cost $AUD 1 billion but now it’s around $6,000. Director of the Phenomics and Bioinformatics Research Centre at the University of South Australia, Desmond Lun, said as the cost of DNA sequencing drops due to rapid advances in technology, it could become part of a standard medical examination.
"It would allow you to know the medical conditions that you are at risk of developing and would allow you to be treated more effectively, in a way that is customised to your genetic make-up," Prof Lun said. DNA sequencing provides a person’s complete DNA profile that includes indentifying a person’s potential susceptibility to disease.
Prof Lun is presenting a public lecture in Adelaide today focusing on how genomic technologies will change people's lives.
